My first meditation with Biet Simkin was a virtual one. Her voice was deep and calming, and the instructions cut straight through the BS. When I opened my eyes after 11 minutes of guided breathing, New York was the same: the honking, the rushing, the surviving.
But I was different.
The meditation – which included placing hands on energetic channels and releasing tension through simple sounds – seemed to have transported me into a parallel Universe. One where I recognize my full power, clear as Justin Bieber’s pre-puberty voice.
Since then, I’ve attended several of Biet’s events and got to know her on a more personal level during our trip to Israel with REALITY Wellness. With Biet, there’s no small talk, and every interaction feels like what she calls “active meditation”: a state in which you’re a present and wise observer of your own life.
Biet Simkin is the founder of Center of the Cyclone, an immersive experience that weaves meditation, self-inquiry, art, music and fashion.
Remember your first screen name?
‘Gracelette’, I think it was an homage to Jeff Buckley who was a buddy of mine before he passed away and also the most talented person I had ever known.
What about favorite computer game growing up?
Some adventure puzzle game similar to Myst. My brother tells me it was called “7th guest”. My brother, I and our friend Nelson would stay up for days playing this game and it was so fun to figure out the puzzles. They were nearly impossible. I remember the levels of nerdy-ness were through the roof! Also the level of connection and love we shared while playing were some of the most intimate times I had with my brother.
How would you explain social media to someone who’s been living in a cave?
Social media is like an awesome social club with bean bag chairs and coffee shops where intellectuals sit around and discuss desires, ideas and world news. Except it doesn’t exist, you can visit it while sitting in your underwear and you can keep pseudo in touch with people while visiting it.
What’s the best thing that happened to you in the digital world?
Real people. You, me!
Favorite social media platform & why?
Facebook and Instagram equally. They allow everyone to share their achievements and they also allow me to share my own triumphs and inspire many people at once. Feeding people with the remembrance of how lucky we all are and what we are capable of is what I live for! I also love being inspired by my friends! If it wasn’t for my amazing community sharing all their wins and understanding I would have no food myself!
What’s your biggest challenge around social media?
I would say compare and despair but it’s only tangential because I don’t allow my thinking mind to have much say in my life. However, as you may know, if you have a mind… It has a lot to say, and it’s all mean, and it’s ALL bullshit!
Social media is no less or more real than the real world.
Do you set boundaries with technology?
I mean, I do and I don’t. I am pretty measured in general but when it comes to connection I go hard and I go all the way. I think the only thing that I would say is a good healthy boundary for me is that I am classy and I care deeply about beauty, curation and presentation. I keep things clean.
Best recent technology-free experience/event?
My Meditation experience this week with Tamara of the Be Society.
Most important lesson social media has taught you?
No one is real, but once you get that you can just be. Social media is no less or more real than the real world. It’s all bullshit. The only thing real is the invisible and the divine. I serve that and the rest is just playtime.
What digital accessories do you use? (besides laptop, tablet and cell phone)
I don’t think I use anything else.
How do you stay authentic online?
I don’t take myself seriously. I love the shit out of everyone. I laugh a lot. I honestly share about my journey.
We are all creators. The desire to be a true artist is innate in all of us. The reason for this is that we came here for the creation of the self. The way to create the self is to remember the self, to unearth. The reason this is the greatest gift you can give anyone is because a created person reminds everyone of their own journey. They see themselves in you! The more fully created people we have the more fully created people we will infect this deep authenticity and greatness from within. You are creating yourself! So what’s that gonna look like for today? Are you stretching? Are you beating yourself up? Are you cheering yourself on? What’s it gonna be? Who are you? #guidedbybiet #? #meditation
If money & time was no issue, where & what would you be doing right now?
Time and money are not an issue and have never been an issue. Time is not mine and an illusion and money is not mine and an illusion. I do exactly what I want with every second on this planet. I do it all in service and none of it is mine! I borrow the higher’s time and I give love. I borrow the higher’s money and I give joy and experiment with freedom.
What makes you feel most alive?
Speaking to a huge group of people. Working out. Reading spiritual literature. Writing my book. Snuggling my fiancé. Petting cute animals. Meditating while I do all those things.
Where can we find you?
Offline: The beach anywhere, a plane, Soho House, Sub Rosa.
